  CDL Training Programs

5 Star Academy's primary purpose is to train graduates to obtain entry level positions in the trucking industry.  All Certificate programs provide classroom/lab instruction and hands-on driving time.  All driving time is completed with only one student per truck.

Even if you've never been inside a big truck, our professionally designed training helps you qualify for your CDL and puts you on the fast track to being a pro trucker.

In fact, our CDL training program includes a special class to prepare you for the written exam at the Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain your CDL permit.

If you already have your CDL and need to upgrade your trucking skills, we have a program for you, too.  And 5 Star Academy is approved and regulated by the Colorado Department of Higher Education, Private Occupational School Board.

5SCVT-I  COMMERCIAL VEHICLE TRAINING  150 HOURS

This program is designed to provide students that have no prior knowledge or experience with all the knowledge and practical skills necessary to qualify them to become entry-level over-the-road or in-town drivers of tractor-trailers, heavy duty trucks, dump trucks, and medium sized delivery trucks. The Graduate receives a Class A, Type I National Commercial Driver's License (CDL) administered by the State with doubles, triples, and tank truck endorsements.

Program duration is 150 clock hours - approximately 4 - 6 weeks. Includes 46 hours behind-the-wheel experience. It is divided into six courses, which are described below. Each course consists of several lessons starting with permit preparation for written exam. Then training will begin with classroom studies on industry related material, such as Air Brake System, Defensive Driving, Log Book Training, Hazardous Materials, Tankers, Map Reading, Trip Planning, and Department of Transportation Rules and Regulations.  This program involves text books, videos, and labs.

At the completion of classroom lessons students will proceed onto the road and skill portion of the program.  This is where shifting training, industry related backing maneuvers and road test procedures are taught.

  • Permit Preparation - This class is to prepare student for the written CDL exam at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

  • Basic Operation - This course teaches students to "pre-trip" - the inspection of the tractor and trailer, becomes familiar with the various parts and controls of the vehicle and their use. The basics of shifting, backing, coupling and uncoupling are emphasized.

  • Safe Operating Practices - In this course the student applies all the basic knowledge learned in the previous unit to driving over-the-road on public streets. The student learns how much space the tractor-trailer needs, speed control, night driving proficiency and many other skills that are necessary to operate vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Advanced Operating Practices - The student is provided the opportunity to learn the high-level skills that professional drivers need to operate under all types of complex traffic conditions, including inclement weather and driving emergencies.  The student learns how to quickly recognize hazards and how to deal with them before they become emergencies.  Student learn the fundamentals of emergency braking, evasive actions, and responses to other emergencies. Instruction focuses on causes of skidding and jack-knifing. Techniques for avoiding and recovering from skids are also addressed.
  • Vehicle Maintenance - This course deals with the various parts of the vehicle and how to determine when they are working properly.  While it is not the purpose of this course to teach the student to become a mechanic, a professional driver must be able to recognize an improperly working part of the vehicle before it causes serious damage or an accident.  The student also learns how to safely and correctly perform basic, everyday vehicle servicing and simple maintenance tasks, as well as how to determine when the vehicle needs the attention of a skilled mechanic.
  • Non-Vehicle Activities - This course covers cargo handling, hours of service regulations, trip planning, accident procedures and reporting, personal health and safety, public and employer relations and other duties that must be handled by drivers to ensure their safety, the safety of the vehicle, its cargo and other highway users.
